Five Ways To Create More Space In Your Small Flat

Living in a smaller flat is extremely common, especially in big cities. Just because you’re a bit short on space, doesn’t mean that you can’t fit everything that you need and want within your flat. With a little creativity and some strategic thinking, you can store all your belongings without it looking cluttered and make the space look and feel bigger as well.

Here are five ways that you can create more space in your small flat.

1. Use Vertical Radiators

Radiators are a necessary fixture in every room of your flat. The traditional horizontal models can take up a lot of valuable space on your wall and prevent you from putting any furniture or storage up against it. Vertical radiators are an excellent option for small flats as they barely take up any space and are versatile enough to fit into awkward corners or nooks where you couldn’t put storage anyways.

2. Install A Coat Rack

Your small flat likely doesn’t have the closet space near your entrance that you can dedicate to outerwear. Hanging coats, backpacks and purses in your bedroom isn’t very convenient, since you want a solution that allows you to grab things on the fly as you leave your flat. Installing some hooks on the wall near your entrance will give your outerwear, scarves, purses and more a place of their own, on an area of the wall that doesn’t serve another purpose. Even a hall bench or chair will end up overly cluttered with stuff and take up valuable floor space. Remove the chair and opt for a coat rack instead.

3. Multi-Purpose Furniture

When you live in a smaller flat, you need to be smart about each piece of furniture you bring into your home and try to see if it can serve more than one purpose. By identifying hidden places for storage, you can hugely reduce the clutter. Storage ottomans are an excellent option for a small flat. They can serve as extra seating when you have guests over, a footrest when you’re hanging out solo, and also store extra blankets or other items. Make sure any side tables or coffee tables have inside storage or drawers to store extra things.

4. Floating Shelves

Instead of buying bookcases or shelving units that take up floor space, install some floating shelves. You can place floating shelves on unused wall space allowing you to make use of the floor space for extra seating, or just leave it empty to create more openness. Use the floating shelves to display books, plants, artwork or knickknacks that give your flat some visual interest.

5. Over The Toilet Shelving

The space over the toilet is often left unused, but some over the toilet shelving can give you tons of extra space to store toiletries, extra towels, toilet paper and more. If you’ve got a small bathroom, you may have little to no storage. Without the floor space to install a shelving unit, there is nowhere to put your things. An over the toilet shelf is an inexpensive option that gives you the opportunity not only for more storage but also to create a focal point for the room.
