Tattoo Aftercare – A Guide

You have just gotten a tattoo, and you are super excited about showing it off, which is great, but don’t forget the important part- taking care of your new ink. Proper tattoo aftercare is really essential for ensuring that your tattoo heals well and looks vibrant for years after.

So, if you are wondering what to do, follow this casual guide to help you through the process.

Listen To Your Tattoo Artist

Your tattoo artist is the expert, so pay attention to their aftercare instructions. Not only will they know what works best for their style and technique, but they will also have had the experience to match – it is not often you see a tattoo artist without tattoos of their own! They may recommend using a specific product for tattoo aftercare, advise you on how often to apply it and provide guidelines on cleaning and protection. If you are not sure or need more clarification – always ask.

Say No To Scratching

As your tattoo heals, there is a good chance it is going to get itchy but do your best to resist the urge to scratch! Scratching can damage the delicate healing skin and lead to infections (and mess up your tattoo). Instead, gently tap or pat the itchy area to relieve the sensation. If the itching persists or you notice any signs of infection, consult a healthcare professional.

No Baths Or Swimming

While it’s essential to keep your tattoo clean, you need to avoid soaking it in water for an extended period. Soaking can cause the tattoo to become waterlogged and increase the risk of infection. Avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas, or any activity that involves prolonged submersion until your tattoo is fully healed.

Avoid Tight Clothing

During the healing process, opt for loose-fitting clothes that won’t rub against your tattoo. Tight clothing can causeirritation, disrupt healing, and cause other skin issues, so make sure to choose breathable fabrics to allow air circulation and aid faster healing.

Be Patient

It is important to remember that healing times vary for each individual and tattoo, which is why you need to be patient and allow your tattoo to go through the healing stages naturally. Avoid picking at scabs or peeling skin, as this can damage the tattoo and leave scars. Don’t go swimming or have a bath if your tattoo is going to be submerged if you are not sure it’s ready. Make sure to treat your tattoo with care, even if you think it has healed.

Your Diet Matters

Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet can contribute to the overall healing process. Hydration helps keep your skin moisturized from within, and proper nutrition provides the necessary nutrients for cell repair and regeneration. If you want to make sure your body is fully supported, make sure to have a decent water intake and up your fruits and veggies.

A Follow Up

After your tattoo has healed, it’s a good idea to schedule a follow-up appointment with your tattoo artist. They can assess the healing process, touch up any areas if needed, and provide further guidance on long-term care and maintenance.

Enjoy your tattoo!
